Is AI Making Us Dumber? How Real Estate Agents Should Actually Use It

AI only makes you dumber if you hand it your thinking. Here's how real estate agents should use AI in the back office so they can be more present with clients.

A friend of mine hit me with this the other day: "Jacob, don't you think AI is making us dumber? People can't even think for themselves anymore."

Here's the thing. She's not wrong.

If you hand your brain over to AI and let it decide how to think, how to feel, and what to do next, it will make you lazy. Agents who already don't want to do the work will just get lazier, faster. But that's not what AI is for, and it's not how I use it. When I opened my laptop and showed her what's actually running my businesses, she looked at me and said, "Oh my gosh. I finally get it."

This is what I showed her.

The Problem Isn't AI. It's Where You Put It.

We've all seen the clip. The agent is walking buyers through a house saying, "These are hardwood floors, these are quartz countertops," and the buyer is snapping photos of each one and asking ChatGPT if the agent is telling the truth.

It's exaggerated. It's also kind of where we are.

So here's my rule:

AI belongs in the back office. It does not belong at the front door greeting your clients.

Yes, people want AI answering calls and doing all of that. It has its place. But you are the person. AI should be making you more human. If your setup isn't giving you time back to be more present with the people you serve, you're doing it wrong.

The 8 p.m. Agent vs. the Agent Who Shows Up Ready

Picture a typical agent at 8 o'clock at night.

They're on the couch or at the desk, answering texts, writing emails, trying to save a deal at 10 p.m., filling out paperwork. Right before bed they realize they never posted on social media. The newsletter didn't go out either.

Next morning, they walk into a listing appointment tired. And they spend half of it glancing at their phone while a family is sitting across the table. I see it all the time. How rude is that? That family deserves your attention. That agent probably isn't getting the listing.

Now flip it.

By 8 p.m., your emails are already drafted (some already answered). Your texts are drafted and ready to go. Your social content was created and posted, and it's actually yours, not the same canned posts everybody else is using. Your video is editing while you sleep.

You show up to that appointment prepared. You're not taking notes, because something is taking them for you. You're not worried about who's texting you in five minutes, because that's handled.

That's the difference between winning a listing appointment and losing it. Being more present. More human.

Where This Hit Home for Us

We'd been building these systems for clients for a while. Then it hit us at home.

My husband, Miguel, left the corporate side of real estate to go full-time and take over our local business here in the Houston area. I'm happy to let him. I run marketing full-time, I still co-manage Texas Homes Sold Group and our deals, and we have 60 agents in our revenue share at eXp who all want attention too.

The problem? I was the bottleneck. Everybody wanted my advice. What should we post? Is this done right?

So we fixed it in layers:

  1. An AI employee for content writing. We programmed it once. It knows our brand and how everything works, and it helps Miguel write his scripts.
  2. A social media scheduler to get that content out.
  3. An AI video editor built inside Claude. This was the real bottleneck. I have over six video editors, and they were splitting time between my content and clients. Now Miguel can edit his own videos when the editors are behind.

Here's the part people miss. We didn't replace a single editor. The AI editor doesn't physically cut video; it prompts the editing software. Our editors now manage three or four projects at a time, put their expertise into the harder edits AI can't do the way we want, and turn out three or four long-form videos a day instead of one.

AI isn't here to replace anybody. It's not here to replace you as an agent. It's here to give you your time back.

What My AI Executive Assistant Actually Does

I use Claude for most of this (I also use Grok, and you can use whatever you want). The thing that really changed my friend's mind was my executive assistant.

Most people "have an AI employee" because they wrote a prompt. Mine has a list of instructions and works from my Brain, so she knows exactly what I need. One of the first things I had her build was a command center dashboard.

What it does:

  • Sorts my email. It's connected to GoHighLevel, my CRM, so it knows who's a client, who's a lead, and who's engaged. Spam gets filtered out, and the important emails come up first.
  • Drafts the reply. I click an email, I see the original and the reply, and it starts drafting a response. It even checks my notes in HighLevel before it writes.
  • Turns emails into tasks. If a deal is going sideways or a report needs reading, one click makes it a task and updates my task list in Notion. No more copy and paste.
  • Runs my GoHighLevel accounts. I hardly log into GHL anymore. Between Claude Cowork and Claude Code, I manage every sub-account for our brands, our real estate teams, and my personal brand from one place.
  • Preps my meetings. It checks who I'm meeting with, pulls my notes and their intake forms, and gives me a briefing before the call.

You still approve what goes out. That's the point. AI drafts, you decide.

A Few More Ways to Put AI to Work

Scheduled tasks are where this gets fun. Inside a Claude project (ChatGPT can do this too) you can have it:

  • Send a weekly SEO report on your website
  • Watch how your Google Business Profile is ranking
  • Review your YouTube videos and suggest SEO fixes, so AI search finds you and recommends you

I even use it outside of business. Instead of hiring a fitness coach, I built a dashboard that tracks my calories, protein, and workouts. It's smart enough to say, "You need 30 more grams of protein but you only have 200 calories left. Here's what I'd eat."

Why We Built the Real Estate OS Community

When I explained all of this, my friend was a little confused. "It's called the Real Estate OS. Are you selling software? A bootcamp? A community?"

It's a community. You pay to be part of it like any other, monthly or yearly. But it runs differently, because I've spent thousands of dollars in communities that drove me crazy:

  • Everything hinged on one weekly call I couldn't make
  • They dumped so many prompts, skills, and courses on you that you didn't know where to start
  • Half of it didn't fit your AI level or your niche, so you did all the filtering yourself

We want to be your filter. We have bots watching what's happening with AI and real estate. If something matters, we tell you. If it's a shiny object, we tell you to ignore it.

And we build alongside you. Once a year we run a 90-day live bootcamp, two sessions a month in November, December, and January, the slower months in most markets. Five-day challenges cram everything into a week when you don't have time to build a business in a week. By January, your systems should be running, and you can start the year scaling.

What's inside:

  • A resource vault you can use from day one
  • A Claude plugin with skills built for real estate
  • 170+ prompts in the library, and growing
  • Training on Claude, ChatGPT, and Grok, including how to use them together or how to run your business on just one
  • Real workflows, like automating your MLS reporting or building a CMA your way so you never rely on your CRM's version again

When something in the industry changes, we update it. Anything outdated gets removed. I'm a teacher at heart, and you get access to me and my team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AI making real estate agents dumber?

Only if you let it do your thinking. Agents who hand every decision to AI get lazier and less skilled. Agents who use it in the back office for email, tasks, content, and reporting get time back to be more present with clients.

Should AI answer calls and talk to my clients?

It has its place, but AI belongs in the back office, not the front door. The relationship is still yours. Use AI to handle the work around it so you can show up prepared.

Will AI replace my assistant or my video editors?

It didn't replace ours. Our editors went from one long-form video a day to three or four, because the AI video editor in Claude handles the routine edits and they focus on the harder ones.

What AI tools do you use in your real estate business?

Mostly Claude, plus Grok, connected to GoHighLevel and Notion. Inside the Real Estate OS we teach Claude, ChatGPT, and Grok, so you can use one or all three.

What is the Real Estate OS?

It's a Hi5 Success community for real estate agents focused on AI and systems. It includes a resource vault, a Claude plugin for real estate, a prompt library, live training, and a 90-day bootcamp that runs November through January.

What happens if I join after November 1?

You still get full access to the community, and every bootcamp lesson is recorded. Joining yearly by November 1 is what adds the live Q&A after each session and the free Real Estate Snapshot.

Ready to Be More Human With Your Business?

AI isn't the problem. Where you put it is. Put it in the back office, take your time back, and give that family at the kitchen table your full attention.
